International Board Certified Lactation Consultant- Part Time 1st Shift .5FTE

This position is primary to dayshift working 20 hours weekly and may be scheduled on alternate shifts to meet the needs of the department. The Lactation Consultant is responsible for the assessment of the breastfeeding couplet and providing breastfeeding education and support for the patient and her family. The position reports to the Director of OB Services. This is a hourly position with no weekend or holiday requirement.

Qualifications and Responsibilities:

  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Certification or successful completion of the program within 1 ½ years of hire
  • Acquire knowledge and demonstrate the competence needed to provide consistent and evidence based breastfeeding information and support throughout the preconception, prenatal, and postpartum periods, while providing culturally sensitive breastfeeding promotion and support.
  • Overall planning, development and marketing of the breastfeeding education services while promoting the importance of breastfeeding.
  • Evaluates breastfeeding teaching practices as demonstrated by staff to ensure the consistency of teaching standards.
  • Assists in the establishment of lactation and the assessment of the breastfeeding mother/baby couplet to assure proper positioning, latch and such during a feeding.
  • Acts as a liaison to staff and physicians when addressing needs associated with breastfeeding.
  • Communicates with physicians regarding patient condition and disposition and documents events appropriately.
  • Provides outpatient counseling services to mothers experiencing difficulties following discharge or needing additional support.
  • Tracking of current lactation trends, development, quality improvement results and statistics in order to monitor and improve outcomes.
  • Maintaining lactation counseling when mother and/or baby are rehospitalized.
  • Development and implementation of an effective prenatal breastfeeding program.
  • Collaborate with the OB Director in establishing professional goals.

Skills:

  • Comprehensive current knowledge of nursing and health care practices
  • Evidence of good communication skills
  • Ability to work well one on one or in groups
  • Current clinical patient care experience
  • Physically able to perform the functions of the position
  • Maintains all required qualifications for area assigned
