How is Physical Therapy Different from Occupational Therapy?

Physical therapy is focused on a patient’s overall mobility and quality of life. While occupational therapy is focused on the specific limitations a condition may bring, physical therapy concentrates more on the impairment itself. So, if one of your most immediate concerns for recovery was regaining the ability to type so you can return to work, occupational therapy would be likely be recommended as a complement to physical therapy.

Physical Therapy:

  • Focused on the condition as a whole
  • Trains patients to use medical equipment like wheelchairs and crutches
  • Managing symptoms of the condition

Occupational Therapy:

  • Focused on helping patients live their day-to-day life without difficulty
  • Helps patients achieve personal goals for recovery
  • Helps patients deal with the mental and emotional challenges of their condition

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized type of physical therapy focused on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, vagina, rectum, and anus.

These muscles play an important role in bladder and bowel control, core stability, and sexual health. When they are not functioning as they should, it can impact daily life in ways many people do not realize are treatable.

Pelvic floor therapy can help with:

  • Bladder or bowel control concerns
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Pregnancy- and postpartum-related changes
  • Core weakness or instability

Treatment is personalized and may include a combination of hands-on techniques, therapeutic exercises, biofeedback, posture and breathing education, and behavioral strategies to support long-term improvement.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment begins with a conversation. Your physical therapist will review your medical history and talk with you about your symptoms, goals, and concerns.

A comprehensive evaluation may include both external and internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles. Any examination is based on your symptoms and comfort level, and your therapist will explain each step before moving forward.

Together, you and your therapist will develop a treatment plan designed to help you feel stronger, more confident, and more comfortable in your daily life.

Initial evaluations typically last 75 to 90 minutes.

How to Get Started

To begin pelvic floor therapy, ask your primary care provider for an order for pelvic health physical therapy.
