Wayne Cancer Center

Wayne Cancer Center opened in 2013 to bring oncology services to Darke County so patients would not have to drive to Dayton for every appointment, every scan, and every infusion.

Today the center provides medical oncology, chemotherapy and biotherapy infusion, cancer navigation, laboratory and imaging services, rehabilitation, and supportive care. Our oncology team works alongside Wayne HealthCare's surgeons, imaging staff, dietitians, and rehabilitation specialists, which means your records, your scans, and your care plan stay in one place.

Treatment is hard enough. Getting to it should not be.

Commission on Cancer Accreditation with Commendation seal

Accredited by the Commission on Cancer

Wayne HealthCare has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, with commendation, since 2010.

Accreditation is voluntary and it is not easy to get. Programs are measured against standards covering diagnosis, treatment, prevention, early detection, quality monitoring, research, and patient education. Fewer than a third of hospitals treating cancer in the United States hold it.

For a critical access hospital in a county of 51,000 people, it means the care you receive in Greenville is measured against the same national standards as programs in much larger cities.

National Clinical Trials, Without Leaving Darke County

Wayne HealthCare partners with the Dayton Clinical Oncology Program, a nonprofit consortium of hospitals across Ohio and Indiana funded by the National Cancer Institute.

That partnership gives Darke County patients access to national cancer clinical trials that are normally only available at large academic centers. Many standard treatments used today exist because of past trials.

Trials fall into several categories, including prevention, early detection and screening, treatment, quality of life, behavioral studies, and genetic studies. Whether a trial is right for you depends on your cancer type and stage.

Ask your oncologist or your navigator whether a clinical trial is an option for your diagnosis.

About the Dayton Clinical Oncology Program

Why this matters for a rural hospital

Clinical trial access is one of the clearest differences between a community cancer program and a large regional center. Most critical access hospitals cannot offer it.

Through the DCOP consortium, Wayne can. It is one of the reasons a patient can weigh staying local against driving to Dayton and reasonably choose to stay.

Common Questions

I was just diagnosed. What should I do first?

Call our cancer nurse navigator, Heather Kremer, RN, at 937-547-5079. She will help you understand your diagnosis, figure out what questions to ask, coordinate your appointments, and connect you with support resources. There is no cost and no referral needed.

Is Wayne Cancer Center closing?

No. Wayne Cancer Center remains open. Beginning October 2, 2026, radiation therapy treatments will move to Dayton Physicians Network locations, but medical oncology, infusion services, cancer navigation, laboratory and imaging services, rehabilitation, and supportive care all continue at Wayne.

Do I need a referral to be seen at Wayne Cancer Center?

Most cancer patients arrive by referral from their primary care physician or a specialist after a diagnosis or an abnormal screening result. Some insurance plans require one. You do not need a referral to speak with our cancer nurse navigator.

What kinds of cancer does Wayne HealthCare treat?

Wayne Cancer Center provides medical oncology and infusion care for a range of cancer types, and coordinates surgical oncology with Wayne HealthCare surgeons for breast, colon, and other cancers. Some diagnoses are best treated at a larger regional center, and our team will tell you plainly when that is the case and help arrange it.

Can I get chemotherapy in Greenville?

Yes. Chemotherapy and biotherapy infusions are provided at Wayne Cancer Center and at the infusion center on the Wayne HealthCare campus. All of our oncology nurses have specialized training in chemotherapy and biotherapy, and several hold oncology nursing certification.

What if I cannot afford treatment or cannot get there?

Transportation assistance may be available through the Wayne HealthCare Foundation for eligible patients traveling for treatment. Contact Lauren Henry, Executive Director, at 937-569-6408. For billing and financial questions, Wayne HealthCare offers financial assistance and prompt pay discounts. Your navigator can help you start either conversation.

You Are Not Alone in This

Whether you were diagnosed yesterday, you are partway through treatment, or you are figuring out what comes after, our team is here. Start with a phone call.
