Wayne Cancer Center’s tumor-fighting linear accelerator has been upgraded to deliver radiation treatment more efficiently and reduce side effects in patients.

The upgrade is the result of a collaboration between Premier Health, Wayne HealthCare, and Dayton Physicians Network. The new accelerator will be welcomed with an open house Thursday, March 5, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wayne Cancer Center, 1111 Sweitzer St., in Greenville.

Linear accelerators produce a range of very high energy radiation beams that are directed to deliver a radiation dose to the tumor inside the body. Wayne HealthCare’s upgraded linear accelerators will feature high-resolution CT imaging, robotics, and rapid dose delivery.

“We are pleased to partner with Wayne HealthCare and Dayton Physicians to unveil another advancement in care for the communities of Greenville and Darke County,” said Mary Boosalis, Premier Health president, and CEO. “This linear accelerator will strengthen the cancer-fighting capabilities of this health system and enhance the quality of life for local patients.”

“Providing cutting-edge cancer care to the communities we serve aligns with our mission to deliver the best possible quality care close to home,” said Wayne Deschambeau, President and CEO of Wayne HealthCare. “Thanks to the new, upgraded linear accelerator, our patients will have access to world-class radiation therapy, and because of the valued partnership we have with Premier Health and Dayton Physicians Network, together we are improving outcomes and making a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients,” added Deschambeau.

The new linear accelerator will decrease treatment time for patients. It also will allow for more accurate treatments, said Ryan Steinmetz, MD, medical director of Premier Health’s radiation oncology program.

“Premier Health and Dayton Physicians Network, through our partnership, are committed to providing high-quality cancer care close to the healing comfort of home,” Dr. Steinmetz said.

As part of the initiative, linear accelerators have been upgraded at Upper Valley Medical Center in Miami County and Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, with Greater Dayton Cancer Center in Kettering scheduled for an upgrade later this year.
